Today’s Bible Teaching and the song is about “Prayer and Obedience”. Keith Green in his song “Make my life a prayer to you” said;

“Make my life a prayer to you
I wanna do what you want me to
No empty words and no white lies
No token prayers no compromise”

A.W. Tozer said “Intensity of prayer is no criterion (my insert: a principle or standard by which something may be judged or decided) of its effectiveness. A man may throw himself on his face and sob out his troubles to the Lord and yet have no intention to obey the commandments of Christ.”

Many Christians pray with fasting for revival or a movement of the Holy Spirit yet they forget that revival or a movement of the Holy Spirit must first begin with us. Prayer even if it is accompanied with fasting can be hampered or made ineffective by unconfessed sin “But your iniquities have separated you from your God; and your sins have hidden His face from you, so that He will not hear” (Isaiah 59:2 NKJV). The psalmist wrote, “If I regard iniquity in my heart, the Lord will not hear” (Psalm 55:18 NKJV).

Lack of obedience to the Holy Spirit and the Word of God will also hinder our prayers. “Beloved, if our heart does not condemn us, we have confidence toward God. And whatever we ask we receive from Him, because we keep His commandments and do those things that are pleasing in His sight.”  1 John 3:21-22 (NKJV). But In order for us to hear God speak we need to be quite and let God speak, “When you pray, don’t babble like the Gentiles, since they imagine they’ll be heard for their many words.” Matthew 6:7

Satan is the greatest hindrance because he deceives us into not obeying His Word. For instance, James 5:16 CSB) says “Therefore, confess your sins to one another and pray for one another, so that you may be healed. The prayer of a righteous person is very powerful in its effect.” and Galatians 6:2(EXB) “By ·helping each other with your troubles [L bearing each other’s burdens], you truly ·obey [accomplish; fulfill] the law of Christ.” If we truly believe what the Bible says and desire to obey God then why do we not follow what these two Bible passages tells us to do? instead we say things like “God knows” or use some other excuse. When we do that our prayers have been hindered because we have obeyed Satan instead of God.

“No one ought to expect to see much good resulting from his labors in word, and doctrine, if he is not much given to prayer and meditation.”  By George Mueller

“Anyone who says, “It is meaningless to pray, because the promise is certain,” will be left out. Such soldiers will not share in the spoils of victory, for they have not shared in the battle. Let us pray and triumph with Him in the battle that can not fail!”
By John Piper

Make My Life a Prayer to You – By Keith Green

Make my life a prayer to you
I wanna do what you want me to
No empty words and no white lies
No token prayers no compromise

I wanna shine the light you gave
Thru your son you sent to save us
From ourselves and our despair
It comforts me to know you’re really there

Chorus

Well I wanna thank you now
For being patient with me
Oh it’s so hard to see
When my eyes are on me
I guess I’ll have to trust
And just believe what you say
Oh you’re coming again
Coming to take me away

I wanna die and let you give
Your life to me so I might live
And share the hope you gave me
The love that set me free
I wanna tell the world out there
You’re not some fable or fairy tale
That I’ve made up inside my head
You’re God the son and you’ve risen from the dead

Chorus

I wanna die and let you give
Your life to me so I might live
And share the hope you gave me
The love that set me free

Not Just Intensity of Prayer
By A.W. Tozer

He who has My commandments and keeps them, it is he who loves Me. And he who loves Me will be loved by My Father, and I will love him and manifest Myself to him. John 14:21

Intensity of prayer is no criterion of its effectiveness. A man may throw himself on his face and sob out his troubles to the Lord and yet have no intention to obey the commandments of Christ. Strong emotion and tears may be no more than the outcropping of a vexed spirit, evidence of stubborn resistance to God’s known will….

No matter what I write here, thousands of pastors will continue to call their people to prayer in the forlorn hope that God will finally relent and send revival if only His people wear themselves out in intercession. To such people God must indeed appear to be a hard taskmaster, for the years pass and the young get old and the aged die and still no help comes. The prayer meeting room becomes a wailing wall and the lights burn long, and still the rains tarry.

Has God forgotten to be gracious? Let any reader begin to obey and he will have the answer. “Whoever has my commands and obeys them, he is the one who loves me. He who loves me will be loved by my Father, and I too will love him and show myself to him” (John 14:21).

Isn’t that what we want after all? The Size of the Soul, 20-21.

“Lord, help me to obey Your commandments. My spirit is willing, but my flesh is weak! I long to live in that obedience, in order that I may know the Father’s love and manifestation to me. Amen.”

Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom, teaching and admonishing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord. (Colossians 3:16)
