Free Will
I have decided to end the series on “the Word” Early because I believe that the Holy Spirit is pressing on my heart to share what I am learning about “Eternal Security”.
I encourage you to watch the Bible teachings videos about “Salvation and free will” on my website www.todaysbibleteaching.com I will be emailing you with further details so be looking for it in your email box.
As in introduction a foundation needs to be laid which is “free will” which is almost never taught in the church today. What is free will? And how does it apply to my life now and in eternity?
First off the Bible has many mentions, examples and teachings on “free will”. Here are just two examples,
Anyone who chooses to do the will of God will find out whether my teaching comes from God or whether I speak on my own. John 7:17
But if serving the LORD seems undesirable to you, then choose for yourselves this day whom you will serve, whether the gods your ancestors served beyond the Euphrates, or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land you are living. But as for me and my household, we will serve the LORD.” Joshua 24:15
The words “chooses” in John 7:17 and the word “choose” in Joshua 24:15 is an example of “free will” it is a voluntary act to freely choose what you want to do. God gave man a “free will” as Genesis 3 shows us when they fell in the Garden. God also gave a “free will” to the angels as we see in 2 Peter 2:4 when they rebelled against God and were cast out of heaven.
When we become a follower of Jesus God does not remove our “free will” to make sure that we remain followers of Jesus does He? Of course not. We see this in many of Paul’s letters like Galatians 5:16-17 “But I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh. For the desires of the flesh are against the Spirit, and the desires of the Spirit are against the flesh, for these are opposed to each other, to keep you from doing the things you want to do.” We have a “free will” before and after being born again.
Finally carefully read Hebrews 6:4-6 says “For [it is impossible to restore to repentance] those who have once been enlightened [spiritually] and who have tasted and consciously experienced the heavenly gift and have shared in the Holy Spirit, and have tasted and consciously experienced the good word of God and the powers of the age (world) to come, and then have fallen away—it is impossible to bring them back again to repentance, since they again nail the Son of God on the cross [for as far as they are concerned, they are treating the death of Christ as if they were not saved by it], and are holding Him up again to public disgrace.”
